Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Warning
Issued: 1:18 PM CDT Jun. 21, 2018 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Brownsville has extended the

* Flood Warning for urban areas and small streams in...
southeastern Hidalgo County in deep south Texas...
northwestern Cameron County in deep south Texas...

* until 130 am CDT Friday.

* At 114 PM CDT, emergency management and local law enforcement
continue to report flooding in southeast portions of Hidalgo
County and northwest portions of Cameron County from the heavy
rain that thunderstorms produced across the warning area yesterday
and earlier this morning. Doppler radar estimates up to 13 inches
of rain have fallen in the warning area. Additional heavy rainfall
will be possible this afternoon through tonight, which will
provide additional flooding issues.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Harlingen, Weslaco, Donna, Mercedes, La Feria, Elsa, Progreso,
Edcouch, Santa Rosa and La Villa.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

Please report flooding to your local law enforcement agency when you
can do so safely.

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. All
interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately.

Flash Flood Watch, Areal Flood Advisory
Issued: 4:12 PM CDT Jun. 21, 2018 – National Weather Service

... Flash Flood Watch now in effect through late tonight...

The Flash Flood Watch is now in effect for

* a portion of deep south Texas, including the following areas,
Brooks, coastal Cameron, coastal Kenedy, coastal Willacy,
inland Cameron, inland Kenedy, inland Willacy, Jim Hogg,
northern Hidalgo, southern Hidalgo, Starr, and Zapata.

* Through late tonight

* areas of moderate to heavy rainfall producing showers and
thunderstorms will continue across the region throughout this
evening and possibly into tonight. Any additional rainfall that
falls over already saturated or flooded locations will quickly
worsen any flooding situations.

* Heavy rainfall in a short period of time will cause small
streams and arroyos to fill quickly to bankfull, possibly
resulting in overflowing. Low-lying and poorly-draining areas
as well as urban locations could see widespread street
flooding with water depth of several feet. Locations that have
seen the heaviest rainfall could quickly see a return to life-
threatening flooding.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.

349 PM CDT Thu Jun 21 2018

The National Weather Service in Brownsville has issued a

* urban and small stream flood advisory for...
central Cameron County in deep south Texas...

* until 445 PM CDT.

* At 348 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to
thunderstorms. This will cause urban and small stream flooding in
the advisory area. Up to one inch of rain has already fallen.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Harlingen, San Benito, Los Fresnos, Rancho Viejo, Rio Hondo,
Olmito, Laureles, Brownsville, Combes and Harlingen arts and
heritage museum.

Additional rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is expected over the area. This
additional rain will result in minor flooding.

This includes Interstate Highway 69 E between mile markers 8 and 35.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as
well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

Please report flooding to your local law enforcement agency when you
can do so safely.

A flood advisory means river or stream flows are elevated, or ponding
of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.
