Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch
Issued: 1:57 AM EDT Sep. 30, 2016 – National Weather Service

... The Flood Advisory for minor flooding in poor drainage areas
remains in effect until 600 am EDT for
western Bath and Botetourt counties in west central Virginia...
northwestern Bedford County in south central Virginia... Alleghany
County in west central Virginia and east central Greenbrier counties
in southeastern West Virginia and the city of Covington...

At 148 am EDT... Doppler radar indicated heavy rain continues over
the area from scattered thunderstorms. This will cause minor
flooding. Overflowing poor drainage areas will also result in minor
flooding in the advisory area. Up to four inches of rain has already
fallen along the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge in Bedford County
to Covington Virginia in Alleghany County. An additional inch or so
of rain is possible through sunrise.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Covington...
Clifton Forge...
Buchanan...
Troutville...
and Stewartsville.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

When it is safe to do so... please send your reports of flooding...
including mudslides or flooded roads... to the National Weather
Service by calling toll free at 1... 8 6 6... 2 1 5... 4 3 2 4. Reports
and pictures can also be shared on the National Weather Service

... Flash Flood Watch in effect through Friday morning...

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a

* Flash Flood Watch for portions of central Virginia and west
central Virginia... including the following areas... in central
Virginia... Amherst. In west central Virginia... Alleghany VA...
Bath... Botetourt and Rockbridge.

* Through Friday morning

* rainfall since early this afternoon has accumulated to up to 2
inches in portions of the Alleghany Highlands. There will be a
setup that favors banding of showers and storms mainly from the
Blue Ridge into the Alleghany Highlands through overnight.
Another 1-2 inches will be possible with locally heavier amounts
which could lead to flash flooding.

* Training of heavy rain could lead to flash flooding of small
streams and creeks... and urban areas.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
Remember... turn around... don't drown!

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.
