Watches & Warnings

Coastal Hazard Statement, High Surf Advisory
Issued: 7:50 PM EDT Sep. 23, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High rip current risk in effect through Sunday evening...
... High surf advisory remains in effect from 6 am Sunday to 8 PM EDT
Monday...

* location... all area beaches.

* Rip current risk... high.

* Surf height... at the Pender and New Hanover beaches breakers will
be 6 to 9 feet. At the beaches from Brunswick County south to
Horry and Georgetown counties the surf will be 5 to 8 feet.

* Timing... strong rip currents can occur at any time but will be
especially strong a few hours either side of low tide. Breakers
will increase Sunday but are expected to be highest Monday.

* Impacts... powerful waves and rip currents which could result in
injuries to anyone who enters the surf.

* Other hazards... beach erosion and ocean over-wash especially
during each high tide through Monday

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents. Life threatening rip currents
are likely in the surf zone.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins, jetties
and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards, and pay attention to beach
patrol flags and signs.

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the
advisory area... producing localized beach erosion and dangerous
swimming conditions.
