The National Weather Service in northern Indiana has issued a

* Flood Warning for
the Yellow River at Knox
* from Wednesday morning to Tuesday February 27.
* At 10 am Tuesday the stage was 7.5 feet and steady.
* Moderate flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 10.0 feet.
* Forecast... the river will rise above flood stage Wednesday morning
and crest near 12.7 feet around 12 PM Friday February 23 and fall
below flood stage around 10 PM Monday February 26.
* At 12.0 feet... local roads and state highways 8, 17, and 23 begin
to flood.

the Saint Joseph River Michigan at Niles
* until further notice.
* At 11 am Tuesday the stage was 11.3 feet and rising.
* Minor flooding is occurring and record flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 11.0 feet.
* At 15.0 feet... major flooding can be expected in Niles. High water
will affect water, marmont, river, and 2nd streets in Niles. High
water will also affect residents living on the first floor of
buildings along River Street.

* from this morning until further notice.
* At 7 am Tuesday the stage was 6.0 feet and rising.
* Minor flooding is occurring and record flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 5.5 feet.
* At 11.1 feet... the river is at the 100 year flood level.

the Flood Warning has been extended for
the Yellow River at Plymouth
* from this evening to late Sunday night.
* At 11 am Tuesday the stage was 11.8 feet and rising.
* Major flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 13.0 feet.
* Forecast... the river will rise above flood stage Tuesday evening
and crest near 16.4 feet around 7 am Thursday February 22 and fall
below flood stage around 5 am Sunday February 25.
* At 16.0 feet... residential areas and High School property flood.
Water from 1 to 3 feet deep affects southern and eastern sections
of the city.

the Kankakee River at Davis
* until further notice.
* At 10 am Tuesday the stage was 11.9 feet and rising.
* Minor flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 10.0 feet.
* Forecast... the river will rise to a crest near 13.5 feet around 6
PM Wednesday February 21 and begin falling.
* At 13.0 feet... extensive agricultural flooding is in progress.
* This crest compares to a previous crest of 13.8 feet which occurred
on Mar 11 2009.

The Flood Warning continues for
the Saint Joseph River Michigan at Elkhart
* from Wednesday morning until further notice.
* At 10 am Tuesday the stage was 22.8 feet and rising.
* Moderate flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 24.0 feet.
* Forecast... the river will rise above flood stage Wednesday morning
and crest near 26.0 feet around 1 PM Friday February 23.
Additional rises are possible thereafter.
* At 27.0 feet... water begins to affect businesses on East Jackson
street. Flooding affects a few first floor residences in the South
Shore drive area across from the hospital.
* This crest compares to a previous crest of 26.1 feet which occurred
on Mar 12 2009.

800 am EST Tue Feb 20 2018

... A Flood Warning for urban areas and small streams remains in
effect until midnight EST Wednesday/1100 PM CST Tuesday/ for
Elkhart... St. Joseph... northern Kosciusko... Starke... Marshall and La
Porte counties...

At 753 am EST/653 am CST/, local law enforcement reports high water
and numerous Road closures across the warning area as 2 to over 3
inches of rain has fallen. Some major routes reported closed at this
time include Bremen Highway, just north of Bremen (due to the Yellow
River and surrounding creeks) as well as the Route 20 and 35 ramp
near Michigan City Airport.

Conditions will likely continue to worsen across the area as an
additional 1 to 2 inches of rain is expected in many areas into this
afternoon.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
South Bend, Elkhart, Mishawaka, Goshen, Michigan City, La Porte,
Warsaw, Plymouth, Nappanee, Westville, Winona Lake, Bremen, Knox,
Georgetown, Syracuse, Trail Creek, Granger, Dunlap, Simonton Lake and
gulivoire park.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as
well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

... Flood Watch remains in effect through Wednesday afternoon...

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of northern Indiana, southwest Michigan, and
Northwest Ohio, including the following areas, in northern
Indiana, Adams, Allen in, Blackford, Cass in, De Kalb,
Elkhart, Fulton in, Grant, Huntington, Jay, Kosciusko, La
Porte, LaGrange, Marshall, Miami, Noble, Pulaski, St. Joseph
in, Starke, Steuben, Wabash, Wells, white, and Whitley. In
southwest Michigan, Berrien, branch, Cass mi, Hillsdale, and
St. Joseph mi. In Northwest Ohio, Allen OH, Defiance, Fulton
OH, Henry, Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert, and Williams.

* Through Wednesday afternoon

* 1 to 2 inches of additional rain is expected across the watch
area, with heaviest amounts expected along and west of
Interstate 69. Locally higher amounts are possible.

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.
