the Big Sioux River at Akron.
* Until further notice.
* At 10am Monday the stage was 22.37 feet.
* Major flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 16.00 feet.
* Forecast... the river will continue to fall to a stage of 21.5 feet
by 7 am Tuesday.
* At stages near 22.0 feet... Highway 48 begins to flood where the
Railroad tracks cross.

* Major flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 20.50 feet.
* Forecast... the river will continue to fall to a stage of 26.9 feet
by 7 am Tuesday.

The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has issued a

* Flood Warning for...
northwestern Cherokee County in northwestern Iowa...
western Woodbury County in west central Iowa...
Plymouth County in northwestern Iowa...
Dakota County in northeastern Nebraska...
Dixon County in northeastern Nebraska...
southern Union County in southeastern South Dakota...

* until 245 PM CDT Monday.

* At 244 am CDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated
that 2 to 5 inches of rain had fallen over the warning area since
late Sunday evening. This excessive rainfall will lead to
considerable ponding of water, in addition to rises in streams and
drainage ditches. Water may linger in low lying areas through
Monday. Some urban streets may remain closed into Monday morning.
Additional rainfall is expected on Monday and may lead to further
flooding issues.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Sioux City, Le Mars, Ponca, South Sioux City, Sergeant Bluff, North
Sioux City, Elk Point, Dakota City, Remsen, Wakefield, Marcus,
Sloan, Hinton, Lawton, Emerson, Merrill, Homer, Jefferson, Allen
and Salix.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as
well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

... Flash Flood Watch now in effect through this evening...

The Flash Flood Watch is now in effect for

* portions of Iowa, southwest Minnesota, northeast Nebraska, and
southeast South Dakota, including the following areas, in
Iowa, Buena Vista, Cherokee, Clay IA, Dickinson, Ida, Lyon IA,
O'Brien, Osceola, Plymouth, Sioux, and Woodbury. In southwest
Minnesota, Nobles and rock. In northeast Nebraska, Dakota and
Dixon. In southeast South Dakota, Clay SD, Lincoln SD, McCook,
Minnehaha, Turner, and Union.

* Through this evening

* thunderstorms are expected to continue through Monday evening.
Some of these storms could result in rainfall rates of 1 to 3
inches per hour which could cause flash flooding in both urban
areas and rural areas in the watch area.

* Poor drainage and low lying areas can become quickly inundated
with excessive water causing flooding. Small streams can become
quickly flooded. Urban areas are prone to flooding in heavy
rainfall across locations that have poor drainage or if sewers
cannot keep with rainfall rates.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.
