Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Warning
Issued: 1:08 PM MST Feb. 23, 2017 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Riverton has extended the

* Flood Warning for...
an ice jam in...
central Big Horn County in central Wyoming...

* until 130 PM MST Friday

* Big Horn emergency management reported 2 ice jams along the Big
Horn river that may still affect homes and property. One ice jam
is between basin and Greybull and the other is downstream of
Greybull near the Sheep Mountain area. Only minor flooding has
been reported with these ice jams.

* Greybull emergency management reported that 2 ice jams are still
located upstream and downstream of the town. The river has
continued to recede and is within it banks. Water is running below
the jams. The Main Channel at the Highway bridge is open with free
flowing water.

* Colder temperatures in the next few days should hinder any
significant movement of ice along the Big Horn river from basin to
Greybull.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

River ice is very unpredictable, and may move and jam with little
notice. Any ice jam can cause flooding, as the ice dams the river,
causing rapid increases in river levels in a short period of time.
People living near the Big Horn river should monitor the situation
closely and be ready to move to higher ground if flooding occurs.

be light after midnight. Flurries will remain possible tonight.
