Issued: 4:33 AM MST Jan. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Winter Storm Warning in effect from 5 PM this afternoon to
8 PM MST Saturday...

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Winter
Storm Warning for heavy snow and blowing snow... which is in
effect from 5 PM this afternoon to 8 PM MST Saturday. The Winter
Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

* Snow accumulations... 6 inches to one foot at elevations above 8000
feet with locally greater amounts over the peaks and along west
facing slopes.

* Timing... while periods of light to briefly moderate snow are
expected today... the more persistent and heavier snow will begin
by tonight and persist through Saturday. Snow will taper off
Saturday evening.

* Winds... westerly 25 to 35 mph with occasional gusts to 50 mph
today. Winds strengthening Saturday from 35 to 45 mph with
occasional gusts to 60 mph.

* Snow levels... temperatures will become cold enough for snow at
all locations.

* Local impacts... high terrain roads are expected to become snow
packed and icy with reduced visibility in snow and blowing
snow. Areas of blowing and drifting snow are expected with
significant visibility restriction at times. Travel will
become difficult or impossible at high elevations above 8000
feet. Very strong winds may damage roof tops... utility lines...
and other structures.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow and blowing snow means
severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring.
Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel
dangerous. Strong winds are likely. Only travel in an emergency.
If you must travel... keep an extra flashlight... food... and water
in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

this afternoon...

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Wind
Advisory... which is in effect from 10 am this morning to 5 PM MST
this afternoon.

* Location... most areas along and to the east of the central
mountains extending eastward to the Texas border.

* Winds... westerly 30 to 35 mph with gusts 45 to 55 mph.

* Timing... developing late morning with most intense winds between
1 to 3 PM MST.

* Visibility... little impact expected although localized blowing
dust possible across recently plowed ag fields and construction
sites. Blowing snow expected across the highest terrain of the
Sandia/Manzano Mountains.

* Local impacts... Crosswinds will develop along north to south
orientated highways.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Motorists should exercise caution while travelling. Sudden gusts
of wind may cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Extra
attention should be given to cross winds.
