Watches & Warnings

High Surf Advisory
Issued: 9:28 PM PST Jan. 15, 2018 – National Weather Service

... High surf advisory remains in effect until 6 am PST Thursday...

* surf and timing... high surf of 6 to 9 feet will build to 7 to 10
feet with local sets to 12 feet tonight through Tuesday.

* Outlook... the surf will diminish some Wednesday night into
Thursday, with another large, long period swell likely moving
into the waters Thursday night. Even larger surf, potentially up
to 14 feet or higher near Ventura Harbor, will continue through
Friday, with high surf slowly diminishing through next Sunday.

* Impacts... large, powerful, and dangerous waves with strong
currents will create an increased risk in drownings. Sneaker
waves can suddenly wash over previously dry beaches and
jetties. There will be also a high risk of life-threatening
rip currents. Damaging breaking waves are possible near the
entrance of the Ventura Harbor. Local flooding of low lying
beach parking lots will be possible with the high surf.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing localized beach erosion and
dangerous swimming conditions. Swim near a lifeguard. If caught
in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the
current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If
unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

When driving, reduce speeds and increase following distance. Use
low beam headlights, and allow extra time to reach your
destination.
