Watches & Warnings

High Surf Advisory
Issued: 5:20 PM PST Jan. 16, 2018 – National Weather Service

... High surf advisory now in effect until 8 PM PST Saturday...

* surf and timing... high surf of 7 to 10 feet will be common
across west facing beaches through Saturday evening... with local
sets up to 12 feet at times at exposed locations such as Ventura
pier. Even larger surf is expected Thursday night into Friday
when breakers of 8 to 12 feet will be likely, with local sets
up to 15 feet possible near Ventura Harbor.

* Impacts... large, powerful, and dangerous waves with strong
currents will create an increased risk in drownings. Sneaker
waves can suddenly wash over previously dry beaches and
jetties. There will be also a high risk of life-threatening
rip currents. Damaging breaking waves are possible near the
entrance of the Ventura Harbor. Local flooding of low lying
beach parking lots will be possible with the high surf.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing localized beach erosion and
dangerous swimming conditions. Swim near a lifeguard. If caught
in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the
current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If
unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
