Watches & Warnings

High Surf Advisory
Issued: 11:53 AM PST Jan. 19, 2018 – National Weather Service

... High surf advisory remains in effect until 9 PM PST Saturday...

* surf and timing... surf is expected to average 8 to 12 feet
today and early tonight. Sets to 15 feet are possible at
exposed locations such as Ventura pier. High surf will slowly
subside late tonight through Saturday evening.

* Impacts... large, powerful, and dangerous waves with strong
currents will create an increased risk in drownings. Sneaker
waves can suddenly wash over previously dry beaches and
jetties. There will be also a high risk of life-threatening
rip currents. Damaging breaking waves are possible near the
entrance of the Ventura Harbor. Local flooding of low lying
beach parking lots will be possible with the high surf.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area, producing localized beach erosion and very
dangerous rip currents. Going into the ocean is highly
discouraged, even for experienced swimmers and surfers. If caught
in a rip current, don't swim against the current. Swim in a
direction following the shoreline until you are able to break
free of it.
