Watches & Warnings

High Surf Advisory
Issued: 5:14 AM PST Jan. 16, 2018 – National Weather Service

... High surf advisory remains in effect until 6 am PST Thursday...

* surf and timing... high surf will build to 7 to 10 feet today,
then continue into Wednesday night before slowly subsiding.
Local sets to 12 feet are possible today and tonight, especially
at exposed locations such as Ventura pier.

* Outlook... surf will decrease some very late Wednesday night into
Thursday morning. Another large, long period swell will like
move into the waters Thursday night. Even larger surf is
expected Friday, possibly averaging 8 to 12 feet. Local sets to
15 feet are possible near Ventura Harbor. High surf will likely
continue into the weekend, with surf slowly decreasing late in
the weekend.

* Impacts... large, powerful, and dangerous waves with strong
currents will create an increased risk in drownings. Sneaker
waves can suddenly wash over previously dry beaches and
jetties. There will be also a high risk of life-threatening
rip currents. Damaging breaking waves are possible near the
entrance of the Ventura Harbor. Local flooding of low lying
beach parking lots will be possible with the high surf.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing localized beach erosion and
dangerous swimming conditions. Swim near a lifeguard. If caught
in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the
current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If
unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
