Watches & Warnings

High Surf Warning, High Surf Advisory
Issued: 5:20 PM PST Jan. 16, 2018 – National Weather Service

... High surf advisory now in effect until noon PST Thursday...
... High surf warning in effect from noon Thursday to 8 PM PST
Saturday...

The National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard has issued a
high surf warning, which is in effect from noon Thursday to 8 PM
PST Saturday.

* Surf and timing... high surf ranging between 10 and 16 feet will
continue along the central coast through Wednesday night... with
local sets as high as 18 feet through tonight. Another round of
even larger and potentially damaging surf is expected to peak
Thursday afternoon into Friday. During this time, breakers of
15 to 20 feet will be common with locally higher sets possible.

* Impacts... large, powerful, and dangerous waves with strong
currents will create an increased risk in drownings. Sneaker
waves can suddenly wash over previously dry beaches and jetties.
There will be also a high risk of life-threatening rip currents.
From Thursday afternoon into Friday, there is an increased
threat of damaging surf and beach erosion, with breaking waves
into the Morro Bay Harbor, and local flooding of low lying beach
parking lots.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing localized beach erosion and
dangerous swimming conditions. Swim near a lifeguard. If caught
in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the
current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If
unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

A high surf warning indicates that dangerous... battering waves
will pound the shoreline. This will result in life-threatening
conditions.
