Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Warning
Issued: 3:30 PM CDT Aug. 16, 2017 – National Weather Service

... A Flood Warning remains in effect until 745 PM CDT for northern
Clay... northeastern Adams... York... Hamilton... northern Fillmore...
Merrick... Polk and Hall counties...

As of 325 PM CDT, a combination of emergency management officials,
law enforcement and trained spotters continued to report at least
scattered instances of mainly minor flooding within the warned area,
as a result of a widespread 2 to 4 inches of rain, and localized
higher amounts up to around 7 inches, that fell over the past 24
hours.

Several rural roads remain closed, especially in Polk County. As for
creeks and rivers, mainly minor flooding was occurring along the big
Blue River in southern Polk County and the Beaver Creek in Hamilton
County, with the West Fork big Blue River in southern Hamilton
County reported to be bankfull. Other creeks and streams that could
be flooding or at least bankfull include... Lincoln creek... Davis
Creek... Clear Creek... flessner creek... Prairie Creek.

Some locations that could experience flooding, mainly in nearby
rural areas include...
Grand Island, Hastings, York, Aurora, Central City, Stromsburg,
Harvard, Henderson, Osceola, Doniphan, Juniata, Shelby, Alda,
Hampton, McCool Junction, Clarks, Silver Creek, Giltner, Polk and
Phillips.

With only minor additional rainfall of one-quarter inch or less
expected through this evening, followed by dry conditions overnight
and Thursday, the majority of ongoing flooding issues should
continue a gradual improvement. However, water levels will probably
be slower to drop on larger creeks and rivers as runoff funnels into
them.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Please report flooding to your local law enforcement agency when you
can do so safely.
