Watches & Warnings

High Surf Advisory, Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 8:59 PM AST Feb. 23, 2018 – National Weather Service

... High surf advisory remains in effect until 6 am AST Saturday...
... High rip current risk remains in effect through late Saturday night...

* waves and surf... seas 6 to 8 feet with breaking waves up to 13
feet.

* Location... Mayaguez and vicinity, northwest through northeast
beaches of Puerto Rico, Culebra, and the beaches of Saint
Croix.

* Timing... high surf through 6 am Saturday. High rip current
risk through late Saturday night.

* Impacts... strong currents that can carry away even the best of
swimmers. Large breaking waves that can result in beach
erosion.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing localized beach erosion and
dangerous swimming conditions. High surf can wash people and
animals off High Rocks and jetties--stay back from the water.
