Portage la Prairie,Mb, Canada

Caption: Portage la Prairie’s Historic CPR Station The present Canadian Pacific Railway Station in Portage la Prairie was constructed in 1893, replacing the area’s first railway station which was built in 1881. The CPR Station was designed by architect Edward Colonna. The building has many distinctive architectual features, and was designated as a “historical railway station” in 1992 under the Heritage Railway Stations Protection Act. Portage la Prairie’s CPR Station was the point of origin of the western section of Canada’s first transcontinental railway system, the “ribbon of steel” which bound the nation together and fulfilled the promise of Confederation. It is currently being restored and will serve as a railway museum
