... Top ten coldest and snowiest February at Richmond and Norfolk

There is a lot that can be said about the comparison of this past
February to previous ones. It was one for the record books.

The month started out with normal to slightly above normal
temperatures with even a day of 70 degrees on the 8th. A series of
cold fronts then followed sending temperatures plummeting for the
rest of the month. Temperatures fell below 50 on the 9th and
only reached that mark one more time at both Richmond and Norfolk
for the rest of the month... a value that is considered a normal high
temperature.

The average temperatures for the last half of the month (feb 15-28)
was the all time coldest by several degrees. At Richmond... that
average was 25.2 degrees... the old record 28.7 in 1934. At Norfolk
the average was 27.2 with the old record 32.5 degrees in 1963.

For the month as a whole... Norfolk averaged 32.5 degrees which is 10
degrees below average. This made it the 3rd coldest on record... the
coldest since 1936 and only 0.6 degrees from tying the coldest
February on record. There were four daily record low maximums and
three daily record low minimums. The coldest reading of the
month... 9 degrees on the 20th was the latest in the season for a
single digit reading to occur... the previous record being February
14.

At Richmond... the temperature averaged 31.4 degrees... 9.5 degrees
below average. It was the 6th coldest February on record and the
coldest February since 1979. There were 3 record low maximums and 2
record low minimums. The coldest of the month was 4 degrees on the
20th and 21st.

For snowfall... there were two major snow events for both
locations... one on the 16th and the other on the 26th. A minor
snowfall occurred at Norfolk on the 24th. Norfolk had 12.2 inches of
snow... the 7th snowiest February. At Richmond there was 11.5 inches
of snow... the 9th snowiest February. At Norfolk... six days in a row
ending on the 22nd had 2 inches or more of snow on the ground... the
4th longest stretch with this much snow on the ground.
