World's deadliest weather disaster of 2010: Rio de Janeiro floods kill at least 183
Posted by: Dr. Jeff Masters, 5:06 PM GMT on April 09, 2010 +2
The world's deadliest and most expensive weather disaster so far this year hit Brazil this week, where at least 183 people are dead due to flooding and mudslides in the Rio de Janeiro region. Damage from the flooding has been estimated at 23.76 billion reais (US$13.3bn, €9.9bn), about 8% of the gross domestic product (GDP) of Rio de Janeiro State. Rio's heavy rains began near 5 pm local time (2000 UTC) on Monday April 5, and continued for 24 hours, with a total of 28.8 cm (11.5") of rain falling--more than the average rainfall for the entire month of April. It was the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in Brazil's 2nd largest city. The rains triggered devastating mudslides that roared through slums built on steep, unstable hillsides. According to the Associated Press, crews have pulled 17 bodies from the debris so far at at a new mudslide that hit in Niteroi, next to Rio, on April 7. Authorities fear an additional 150 people may have died there.

The previous deadliest weather disaster this year was the snow avalanche in Afghanistan that killed 172 people on February 8 and 9.

Wow, 3 milestones all passed in one day! GOMEX gets to the 80 degree mark, the GFS predicts it's first tropical cyclone for the season, and the first blob to watch comes around! Im not liking April 9th much either oz.

Appears to either be extratropical or subtropical. Unlikely anything ever comes of it, unless all the models start catching on, and maintain support.

GFS depicts it as semi-warm core.

Highly unlikely it'll verify. The Gulf is rather cool.

Note from the Mobile newspaper. I think someone at FEMA must have some wires screwed up.

FEMA WEBSITE SAYS IVAN, KATRINA DID NO FLOODING DAMAGE TO GULF COAST
Jeff Amy. The (Mobile, Ala.) Press-Register. April 8, 2010.
To encourage more people to buy flood insurance, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has an extensive Web site — www.Floodsmart.gov — which examines past flood damage in every county in the U.S. since 1993. But on the Web site, the Alabama coastal counties of Mobile and Baldwin show $0 damage from Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and Hurricane Katrina the following year.

And the Web site's histories on coastal areas in Mississippi and southeast Louisiana do not mention anything about Katrina either. FEMA spokesman Brad Carroll said his agency did not use its own data for estimates of flood damage from hurricanes, but instead relied on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the parent agency of the National Weather Service.

A NOAA spokesman referred any comment on the question of why the Floodsmart data is incomplete to FEMA. Full Text

Huh????

Hmmm.... there's a reason why FEMA begins with F....

I'm just sayin'....

And our day is getting better by the minute;

"11:24 AM CST Friday 09 April 2010
Winter storm warning continued

Strong winds with poor visibilities in snow and blowing snow today.

An intense low pressure system continues to bring a variety of high impact weather across Southern Saskatchewan this morning. Damaging winds over 100 km/h..Snow and blizzard conditions are being reported from this powerful storm system.

The worst conditions are being felt on the southwest flank of the storm. In these areas heavy snow combined with winds gusting to 100 km/h are producing widespread blizzard conditions. Power outages are also likely due to the winds and heavy wet snow. These conditions are expected to continue into this afternoon before easing by evening.

Snow and poor visibilities will continue into this afternoon along with winds up to 100 km/h. These poor conditions will slowly spread north by midday or early this afternoon. 2 to 4 cm of snow is possible in these areas along with winds gusting to 90 km/h this afternoon. Travelling conditions will deteriorate as the snow moves in. Highways reports that highway 11 has been closed between Dundurn and Davidson.

Further south and east the main problem will be the strong winds with west winds of 60 gusting to 100 km/h at times today over southcentral and Southeast Saskatchewan especially along and north of the transcanada highway. Winds have gusted to 104 km/h at Regina this morning."

Katrina did no flooding damage, in NOLA?

I guess you can argue the point. The city is below sea level as it is.

As for Waveland, Pass Christian, Bay St. Louis, and Biloxi, Katrina's surge destroyed alot, but you cannot count a storm surge as a flood.
But, as I discovered while reading last night, there was also extensive inland flooding that was not directly connected to the surge. This is especially true along the Pearl and Pascagoula rivers in MS....

I don't think you are "you know who" and either is the other person that people think is "you know who" The other person on here now has used the semicolon correctly 3 times. I don't think "you know who" ever did. But when you use words like conceise (sic) (concise) instead of precise, it gives people reason to think you are "you know who". Anyway, I look forward to your entries and no disrespect intended.

Here's a nice PM topic:

What did you do that got you banned for the longest time from the Doc's Blog?

I got a 96 hour ban when I posted a home-made birthday card to StormW.

The card was a picture of a giant cargo freighter loaded with containers.

The caption?:

Good News!
Your birthday candles have arrived!

Maybe I should ask again:

What can be done to improve wx instrument performance in cat 4/5 conditions? Data on wind speed / direction and pressure is often incomplete because of equipment failure.

Been doing great; busy with family and garden and the other blogs. I just "check in" here every now and then in "off season".

In a sick sort of way, after last year's "nothing" year, it is sort of exciting to be gearing up with what could be another 2004/2005/1995 LOL

But us weather geeks are sort of "sick" in that way. LOL

It would most likely weaken somewhat...unless it goes extratropical after hitting the cooler water, and takes on a baroclinic process.

23C will support subtropical.
I wonder how strong an sub-tropical cyclone can get? I know there was a mid-latitude cyclone that whacked Greenland in March of 1972 with a wind gust of 207 mph. I do not ever hear of sub-tropical storms producing anything remotely close to that.
