Not an island, island, we were just surrounded by water. My parents lived in Huntington Harbor back then. Think Balboa Island and you are pretty close. Only homes, no businesses, but still, you drive over a bridge and you are surrounded by water! LOL
We had a short rain event last night, then we had some rather fierce winds. They kept up most of the night and today. Hopefully they'll calm down tomorrow. Would have been a perfect day if it weren't for the winds.
We had all those fierce winds too, and it was cold out there!!! Now up into the 70's this week and then back down again. Typical spring for us.
Gardening is fun this time of year. I put the tomato starts in the greenhouse in the morning and bring them back into the house at night. This will go on probably until I plant in mid May. It does make for nice tomato plants though!
Looks like we will be starting our new patio table this week. It will be out of Trex decking material. No maintenance on this one, forever we hope. I was hoping to have the inside of the cabin painted...... maybe summer!
Guinea eggs come tomorrow, we have Footoo ready to brood them with her own nursery. Should be quite a site with that little hen raising up those rather large guineas! We also have our incubator ready to go just in case plan A does not work.
Kodiak is warming up as my DIL was able to go for a run on Sunday. The deer have been all over the base on all the grassy areas, they said they have been fun to watch. Brody has already wrecked his dad's XBox! He just happened to push the right button (he is sooo smart!) and out came the disk holder, which he then pulled and pulled and pulled.... maybe dad can fix it. He hopes so anyway!
Work tomorrow, oh well, it has been fun playing this weekend with my own plants!
Enjoy the week, and the sunshine!!
Tell your son and DIL good luck!
.08" from the last storm (well, hopefully not the LAST storm!) Now a distant memory, sunny and 70s here too.
Finch sock is fun, and such an interesting sound the finches make. Bees, bees, bees.. So the veggie oil was not a good solution? Seems like we could make a fortune if we could figure out this bee proofing! Desert willow seedlings getting bigger.

Easter Prayer
May all happiness be yours,
Your troubles fade away,
And only gladness reign within
Your heart, this Easter Day.

Hi WTS. glad the willow seedlings are growing. Maybe I should water mine, they might sprout if I do that, LOL!!! The veggie oil works to a certain exten, I am now using a pastry brush with much better results. Now we are having problems with the Sundance feeder. Filling it is a pain! It leaks from the ports, even following directions on their website it still leaks out 1/4 to 1/3 of the nectar!! I called them and they are sending a different feeder (the one that fell apart in the wind, that I threw away). Mr. P says he can fix the problem. They are sending it for free! On their website the sundance feeder is now only $5.00 I guess they figured it was not going to be a best seller.
Storms on their way, Yea!!! Saw some chias coming up on today's hike. But they are very stunted. The cowania is blooming up a storm, I hope the bees move to them!!!
Hi Karen, I was first on your new blog, fitting for a calpoppy!
Hi Jus, and Sandi!! Thank you for the Easter greetings, I feel bad that I did not have time to send one out to everyone :((
Hi GG, thanks for your Easter greeting!!!
The bunny showed up with presents, I think I told you what they were on your blog!!
The only wren we have here are cactus wrens. Which when I get all the pictures of the different nests out here they will be part of a new blog.
I spent part of Easter morning combating bees on the feeders. I would run out with my pastry brush full of oil and brush it on the feeders then run back to take sanctuary in the house! Those bees were a bit upset, LOL!
A beautiful day out here, but the rain will be on its way. Always appreciated! Two storms, one on Wednesday and one Friday. Right now they don't look cold, so that is fine by me now. I am ready to get the garden growing.
Hope you're having a good day!
The above is from my blog.
I've been to Julian a few times, it's a lovely little town! My mom has lilacs in her yard! Been to the Aquarium of the Pacific a few times too! Now the Natural History Museum - well, it's been a while. I think we've decided to head back to the Getty Museum. I went years ago for an art class, and it's so big you can't possible see everything in one visit. Now, to pick the day!
I was with my mom most of the day today.....doctor's visit, trip to Braille for more audio books, out to lunch, grocery shopping - spent most of the day doing that.
Now I'm reading on the couch and munching Easter chocolates - I'm spent! (Riding Lessons - Sara Gruen, and I'm liking it so far!)
I should try the cucumber and now brushed on oil for the bees (maybe early in the morning before they show up :)
Hi Karen! Have fun at the Getty! You know I have never been to any of the places I suggested!!! I guess maybe I want to go to them. LOL!
I will have to check out Riding Lessons. Right now I am reading the second book of The Game of Thrones. Excellent books!!!
Hi WTS! Yes the o ring is more then an inch across. Even with veggie oil on the o ring it still is leaking, just not as much. But then now the Orioles are having a hard time getting anything out of it! AHHHHHHH! Now I need to go oil the feeder, maybe I should put on my old bee suit!!!!
Went to a farm a couple of towns over and picked up some worm castings, lots of worms too. So into the garden they went. We just dug the cover crop in yesterday so this is the perfect topping. Compost should be done in a couple of weeks and then it will go in too.
The lady had two lovely merino ewes, and she also had wool that she spun. I have to figure out how much I need for a scarf! It should be a fun project, I just have to see if I still know how to crochet!!!
Back to work tomorrow, in time for the rain. Enjoy the rain SoCal!
I was taken by surprise by the ceanothus bloom on the way up to Julian. Good timing.
Ended up not going to the Getty - I kept my eye on the traffic and it wasn't cooperating very well. My daughter, the commuter, said that Tuesday and Thursday are the worst days, that's why they carpool on those days.
So we ended up riding our bike to our local Japanese Gardens, and then taking the dog to a park for a picnic.
We certainly had quite a downpour last night. Did you get snow? It's pretty today, but a tad on the chilly side. It's making it easy to make my split pea soup from my leftover ham from Easter!
On Sunday I went to Beaumont and had a lovely view while driving along Cherry Valley Rd. There was a lot of green grass, flowering fruit trees, and critters – horses, miniature horses, sheep and, yes, goats! The goats had kids :) I think there are llamas (they may be Alpacas) along that road, too, but don't remember seeing them this time.
Very little snow on the mountain tops, which felt odd. Well, it was over 80 degrees there that day.
I think you'll have no problem remembering how to crochet (it's like riding a bike!) and doing so with wool from a sheep you've met will be so cool :)
Hey, do you happen to know if all Merino wool is washable? Or is it treated somehow to make it so?
Oh, and thanks for the squeaky toy(s) ;)
All is good with my family, but please put the two people who died in your thoughts!!!!
Are you getting snow in the mountains? If so, I bet it's pretty!
Have a good night; I hope you'll be able to sleep!
The merino yarn sounds interesting, but I'm not clear on whether you bought some or are just thinking about it. IMO, you could use a nice, soft scarf on next winter. And I don't think one can forget how to crochet -- muscle memory is permanent memory, just like riding a bike.
Glad #70 turned out okay for you and yours, although your blood pressure must have soared for awhile.
FBI is calling it a double murder... no arrests ,yet.
Thanks all for your concern about the shooting in Kodiak!!!!!!
Very sad, and my heart goes out to the families of these service men.
Glad that you and yours are safe.
Something very strange is going on on the island..... gang activity maybe ????
Hi WTS! Sounds like you had a fun weather event! Our power did go out for about 40 minutes in the middle of the night. Quite the sight to see the wall of snow come down from the canyon right to us. Lots of wind too!
Hi Karen! Glad you got out and about. Had some snow on the second storm. I guess it is back to work for you tomorrow. I hope you got lots done on your house on your spring break!
Hi SP! I believe the merino wool is washable. But I will find out for sure. I really liked the natural undyed wool. I have decided that I will try knitting. Especially since I have a willing teacher! If it is any where near decent I will post the pictures! But it may be awhile :)
Hi Ylee! It was a shock to hear about the shooting on the radio. The unknown is always hard. I feel like a mother hen, always wanting her chicks to be by her side so I know they are safe. We did get some snow here and in the mountains, it is very pretty right now.
Hi GG! Thanks for the hugs :)))) I sure hope the effects of the chemo will disappear for you soon. Some warm sunshine and days out playing in the garden should help with some of it!!!! I have known many women who had a hard time of it after a hard fight with cancer. Exercise would be great too, lots of walking with Roxie!
Hi Rob!!! So nice of you to come over to my blog!! So far everything is fine up there with my kids! Went to your blog yesterday and had a great laugh!! I love firefighting Island style!!!
Hi Miss Nadia!!! Thanks so much for the updates on the Kodiak situation!! It is very much appreciated! I talked with my son and they still don't have the shooter. I don't know what it means for the island folk not to worry about the situation, that is crazy! Was it a robbery gone bad or just someone targeting military personnel? I do not believe there is gang activity on the island, though there are some young men who would strip a car in no time. With the FBI involved there will be little info available.
The last couple of days have been cold and windy, rain and snow. Today it is beautiful. We even had breakfast out on the new patio table Mr. P built. Ahh spring in the high desert.
I will be giving another gardening seminar in a couple of weeks. Looks like I will have to fill 1 1/2 hours! The other person couldn't make it. This will be on veggie gardening and drought tolerant plantings. Should be fun. They will be serving lunch and giving away plants. This is a county function so I am going up in the world of giving seminars :)))
For all you So Cal people enjoy this week it looks amazing!
Though I did see a long range forecast that has rain in the last week of April, how weird is that.
don't miss the other two colors.
[sorry - brain bleach not included with this comment ;)]
For what it's worth and that isn't much, I think it may have been a mob hit. One of the dead may have been undercover or an informant. The other was just in the wrong place. It just doesn't look like the work of an amateur.
Maybe you can one of those thingys sp mentioned at the seminar? ;-)
Prayers to the folks in Kodiak; hope they find the gunman soon, so at least the folks up there(and you, too!) can relax a bit!
Hi Ylee! The plants were all good! Though I only have one remaining nectarine on my tree. All the wind and other frosts have taken care of most all the fruit.
I do need something to wear for that seminar.......
Ylee's funny! I will not be held responsible for the consequences if you wear that out in public!!!! LOL
Maybe your scarf will be done and you can extoll the virtues of local products and native plants :) Of course, it'll probably be 100 degrees, unless it's in the mountains again.
I think it's way cool that you are in demand as a speaker. An hour and a half is a lot of time to fill but your subject is vast. Really sounds like fun!
I'm totally envious of your wool, you know ;)
Feds are telling the people not to worry...something stinks !
Be sure to accessorize with a Dr Who scarf.
Anyhow, congrats on another speaking gig. Maybe you could start doing a local cable show or net page. then again, coming up with new material on how to dish dirt could get kind of old and you would have to compost some ideas to get new growth.
Hi Miss Nadia! The FBI has searched a house on the island of a co-worker of the two men shot. The man in question is a civilian.
Thanks Karen!! They bring a smile to my face also. They have planted themselves around my pond at work and in other places and they are in full bloom now. So cheery!
Hi GG! It was nice of SP! I always need new ideas!!! I do dish out a lot of dirt during the season.
During the season I talk garden non stop. At the gym, at the grocery store, and of course at work and after work at consulting jobs and design consults. Everyone has questions!! At the end of the day I am talked out!!!!
You must have had so much fun with those butterflies. We don't get many here, just some Lady butterflies and occasionally Monarchs in August.
Hi Briar! Maybe in my younger years it would have been fun to do something like that, now I think it is nice to just do a talk every once in awhile. I have even cut back on my design jobs. Getting home after eight each night was very wearing!!! Plus all the phone calls, it caused to many headaches! I like it much better now, I do a lot of consulting but only a few design jobs a year. Right now I am doing a design on a front yard ( I did their backyard last year). I really like the people but they each have different ideas so I have to be the moderator. The jobs all work out, and it is so nice to go back and see the finished work!
I never design my gardens!!! I just start with an idea then go with it. It evolves and finally becomes a garden.
Can you tell that work is on my mind!!
I did work on my garden this morning. Mr. P dug up my main veggie garden and I planted the tomatoes I had started from seed. I planted Shady Lady, Sweet 100 cherry and WTS's favorite tomato Sungold cherries. Plus an heirloom Aunt Gerties Gold tomato. I also planted butternut and acorn squash, more strawberries (this time Tristan) and a Poblano pepper that I did not start from seed.
No new blog this week, hopefully next. I need to take more pictures for it.
It's my whiny season beginning! We've had a marine layer all week. Sometimes the sun peeks out, sometimes it doesn't, and you don't have to go very far to find sunshine. Problem is, I want to stay home!
Pageant is over, recovery is in full swing, just a couple more things to attend too, and we'll start for next year! LOL
Congrats on the seminar, too. Things like that are really fun - I know you'll have a good time, and the folks will learn a lot.
I came by especially to bring you this link. I'm told that these are blooming now only a couple of hours away - is that reason for a roadie? It would be, were it not for work. Ah, well.
Anyway, here are our white poppies. Aren't they beautiful? I've never quite gotten over the photos you posted of yours a while back.
Hi Shore! I see in your blog you have been working a lot!
Thanks for the link on the Prickly Poppies. We have them out here but not in such abundance as to the picture on your link. My Matilja poppy has now 4 new plants that have come up. Three came up last year and a new one this year. It may take over that whole area, I hope it does.
Here is a fun pic of the day. A photographer decided to have fun with dogs in a pool. A little underwater photography made some great shots. Enjoy!
The FBI is now searching for two vehicles..a 2002 white dodge RAM and a blue 2001 Honda CRV.
It is time to call The Mentalist !!
Awwwwww, Brody :)
Those dogs just look silly, LOL
I told you the story from Alaska would get interesting! Well, it seems interesting, so far, as the info trickles out.
I guess you can expect some pretty good rain, huh? No snow, though. Sure looks good there right now! Much nicer than here, lol
Friday might be a good desert roadtrip day. Still cool from the storm but not wet. Hmmm ....
Things go a bit sideways.
Nobody was hurt in any way (except feelings) but one day I was in flying the camp with the chopper pilot and he said: "How are things going?"
I said: "Fine."
He said: " I don't mean with you - when I take the Party Chief and Brent out and drop them off together I wonder what I would do if only one of them showed up at the pickup point."
At some point I quit contributing to the:
"You want to know what the a$$hole said today?" dialogue.
That Chief was lucky to get out alive.
