Sunday March 11: Thunderstorm Outlooks
Post #43

(Below is from earlier in March when we went to the National Severe Weather Workshop, and traveled from Chicago to Norman, passing through Joplin)

Photobucket">

Joplin, MO Mar. 5, 2012 - Construction on a new Joplin Hospital-- Mercy Hospital. 10 months after an EF-5 Tornado ripped through Joplin, MO and destroyed St. John's Hospital, and tremendous portions of the City of Joplin, killing 161.

I hope this photo is one of HOPE for those who may not even be able to see hope at the moment-- those hit by tornadoes in many states the past few days...

LOL. I hate it when they do that. There are online airport code lists but it's sometimes quicker to search than scroll through everything. AND having to do that is just silly.

I'm gonna put this here because...
You are right about communicating.

That right there is the problem with communicating to the public. There has to be language we can't understand. If it is going to be published and not just discussed in the office, please make sure we can understand it. Or give us the benefit of a definition or hint...and don't just act like the freakin smart guy in the room using words we don't know. Thank you rant off. This may disappear. sheesh.

Romeoville - can't help being curious about a town with that name - maybe has a "contact us" button on their webpage. Might not hurt to push their button(s).
:)

Gotta run for a bit.

Looking forward to BoomerDay.

Ok I've been reading the discussion for a while. Is this the Aviation discussion? Did I miss something. What is UGN and PWK??? I'm very mad at this discussion tonight. Especially because we were at 80 degrees and now are at like 53. And, I do see Krein's discussion from earlier (ty Krein). This one, eh...I just don't know.

"...Fog and stratus is finally making its push ashore into far NE Illinois
to ugn and pwk. Expect further but gradual spread S and SW during
the night as not a strong push at all behind the front"...

Add: NO we are at 45 degrees now. Almost a 40 degree drop!

Ok...what is pia and bmi?

Chicago/Romeoville Discussion:

"...Expect the convection currently moving NE toward pia and bmi to
continue to spread across the southern and eastern parts of the
local forecast area during the late evening and overnight hours...."

Trs

GHrrrrrr fine. Keep it to yerself, keep it to yerself. This may disappear. sheesh.

Back to reading the discussion...bbs

Oh Add: Maybe I'm dumb and don't know what bmi or pia is? I will look it up. However, sometimes that does not help cause they are just being smart. I suppose the discussion should be for the experts and their like their pr release on the siteeation. But if they are going to publish to the public, they should make it for all. There's a point here. Keep it inter-office memo if it's like speculation and examination. Publish with caveats in normal terms to the public.

The cold front just came through here. ewwweee chilllleh. Apparently, we will warm up again by St. Paddy's day. I have to work. However, I found out we have a fireman's fund raiser in Fox Lake, close by which has bands and all kinds of fun stuff even after I get done working. I think we will go there on St. Paddy's. A good cause.

Back to our cold front: I was standing out side and it was like a wall of chill hit me. Not too bad, no muss, no fuss, no storm with it. Knock on wood. Going to look at the discussion, and check the SPC before bed though. bbs? If not have a good night everyone. What amazing weather...SMH

LMAO. LOok at your post. The bright yellow lettering, and it goes on and on through the whole video. I hope they found a kidney.

I liked the Coca-Cola car at the end.
:)

I remember the flea market find. Did not know you'd found the artist? or just his work? in OKC Paseo district. I was there only one time, about 6 years ago, and watched some artists working.

Huh? You mean the Sugar Creek Vineyards Michael's Signature Red??? Oh-- I have no idea ;) We gave it all away as gifts, uhm, well most of it ;)

Did I tell the story about the art work? I found the artist, Bert Seabourn's work in a gallery on our travels in Oklahoma. He painted the artist proof I found in the flea market story from post #85 in the blog from November?

I found him in Paseo. I'll have to review the blog to see if I updated that story?

LOL. Reminds of Monster truck commercials. Kind of distracting, the person needing a kidney. Hope s/he found one.

If nothing else, theta e will make for a great running joke, especially if weather is bearing down and we need a laugh.

You and wab up in IL are warmer than here. Been like 74-77 past two days. Not really unheard of for mid March. Seems kinda normal. Gray skies today. Nice S wind but not that warm summer kind.

I like the winery story! How was their wine?

Hi wab. Amazing. 27 degrees above normal for the average of the next few days. And, walking the dog tonight, the stars were beautiful in a relatively clear sky. So shocked we don't have storms with this kind of warmth.

One of the interesting things learned on our trip through Missouri (Augusta, Hermann, Katy Trail wine country) was the wine masters had already had to prune their vineyards (as of two weeks or so ago). Very Early!
Then the pests they were already experiencing were also an issue we talked about--way too early and unfortunately more pesticide (I did not discuss this very much with him, so I do not know if they were organic type or other insect type measures) but the weather has been a GAME CHANGER. Last year the same thing happened in a way...early warmth and then they had a freeze! THEN, they had bad storms and tornadoes rip through the vineyards hills. One year ago, many of those wineries were hit.

You can tell I'm very concerned about the wine ;) No, it was just another living example of the changes here with a Winter without snow, and a very warm Spring.

On another note: Although we had early leaves of bulbs up, I really did not get my first 'blooms' until the past couple of days. That is normal. Some of the bushes are a bit early, but not unheard of. Bugs? Well yes, there are a lot more. And a mosquito or two...ugh. Queen ants are busy.

(ha ha BF where'd we put that Theta E map?)
LOL. I am so glad you found it. Thank you.
:)

I found some in a couple places but yours is relevant to today and more colorful!

Jeff Haby

Theta e
(or Equivalent Potential Temperature) - The temperature a parcel of air would have if
a) it was lifted until it became saturated,
b) all water vapor was condensed out, and
c) it was returned adiabatically (i.e., without transfer of heat or mass) to a pressure of 1000 millibars.
Theta-e, which typically is expressed in degrees Kelvin, is directly related to the amount of heat present in an air parcel. Thus, it is useful in diagnosing atmospheric instability.

Sunday outlook's got a Springly, dryline-type setup on the Plains. I gather from reading the main, some people like accuweather and Reed Timmer are looking for lots of action. Well, heck, the risk will move east, shirley, and we will see risk days beyond Sunday.
SPC day 4-8 for Mar 15, 2012

Add: 3/15 noon. Oops. lol I see that updated to today's Day 4-8. Can't capture that one without taking a screen grab. Replaced yesterday's day 4-8 with a static image of today's 4-8.

Hi Oz, how exciting and they are in Wisconsin? Who knew, LOL. Should be fun hearing your dau's stories from Brazil. By the way, another blogger here at WU, Ylee, has a live cam up from Adelaide, Australia. Looks Very Nice!

The puppy breeder just could not do it today. Nothing wrong (so far as I know) with the litter. But if there is, I am glad she is holding them to make sure --as a litter-- they are all good to go.

I had the new glasses checked and re-checked and yes, the nose pad hit me wrong and the curve could be wrong in the right lens? But, they fixed the nose pads and adjusted them. It is much better. This is good because I LOVE the new frames and was very sad when the prescrip seemed off. Glasses are just sooo expensive and I do not get them very often.

So, think this will just stay south of us today. We'll get our share tomorrow, I think. Still need to look at Sunday(?) I guess.

From the local discussion:
Link

(ha ha BF where'd we put that Theta E map?)

No significant upper level forcing noted...but low level
Theta-E axis extends up the Mississippi Valley into northern
Illinois with MUCAPE values in excess of 2000 j/kg noted on RUC
analysis fields...rooted in the deep boundary layer this afternoon
and weakly capped.

Hi Jus, yes this is when ALL the breeders of welshies in the US come together for a week of agility, obediance, trialling, and showing, so really looking forward to it. Hope my daughter does get to come as she can take hubby off if he gets bored! She has just returned from Brazil so looking forward to hearing about that too. Hope you get the glasses sorted... and all puppies are worth waiting for!

Update on Puppy - Boomer will not be here until Friday. The breeder asked the 'yewts' to wait because she had something come up. :( awe. oh well, more time to get ready.

NEw, Colorado is part of 'The West'. It's true. I heard it on The Weather Channel today!

Hi Mass, all that counts is that it be nice for St. Paddy's day :) (hey 25 is too cold, no fair to you guys) But we get the same treatment tomorrow, 30 degree swing in temps.

BF, I am going to have to come back and check all the SPC discussions because they seem to be changing rapidly.

Zoom--- over and out--- running to a house.

Add: Picked up my new eyeglasses and the prescription is really wrong. Back to the shop and Dr. grrrr

Good Afternoon Jus!

Great to see your blog up and running again! Hope some of those quite irritating problems have been solved!!

Once again, our region of Mass. has experienced quite a change in seasons these past 24 hours. Late last night, the cold front from the New Brunswick region of Canada slid down and collided with the warm one, eminating from our Southeastern states. The result certainly created quite the lightning and thunderboomer show around here. Thankfully, no damage whatsoever was reported.

It's strange to return to temps dipped down by 25F degrees to 45F, but this chilly spell should last only a couple of days. By Sat., St. Patty's Day, our temps are expected be on the rise again and could well reach 70F again or more by Monday and Tuesday of next week. What a great way to usher in spring's official arrival! Now, if these unusually warmer temps could remain throughout without any serious consequences, that would be the icing on the cake for me and many!

Hope you're doing well and that you, and all our other WU friends posting here today, make it safely through any thunderboomers, etc. forecasted in their areas as well!

scratching head, always confused when we start dividing up the states into segments.
Southern plains Texas,OK,Kan,I guess Ark?
What the heck is Colorado?
Where do the Northern Plains start?
What is the midwest?
Then again do any of those people there really care?
Important questions I will have to ponder.
Any excuse to avoid work that I should be doing.

Nodding off. lol Expert what???
Well, those forecasters lump OK in the Southern Plains. Part of the state is plains. Consider borders with Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, N Mexico, Colorado and maybe 50-60 miles from Louisiana, no wonder huri calls this "the Middle." (Ps. Oops, almost forgot the border with Missouri. Added it.)

Whaaa? jus. Illinois has a day 1 slight now. Dang, you beat my "See Text" with a "slight" for wind and hail.

Hmmm. No day 3. Well, two days rest for the sky to recoup before Day 5 Sunday booms - if it's gonna.

Headed up to 80 possibly! Just ridiculously warm. Good morning peeps! Yesterday was quite bz but all's well.

NEw - did I see a report of hail your way after 11 pm in March! The comment I saw was that it was highly irregular--highly irregular. lol
We are going to have a cold front come through tomorrow night and freak everyone out with 30 degrees. I'll be by you maybe a bit later.

BF - I don't understand why there's really no day 3?
That text certainly looks ominous. With it being this warm something will give somewhere.
Yes, it is Boomerday! Not sure when the kids are going to pick her up. Hope you have nice weather there, too.

Sandi - You poor thing. You should jump on a plane with Ozgalah and come to Wisconsin! (via Illinois) we are hoarding all the sunshine lately. Even after our little storms and small cold fronts, it rebounds to pleasant 70's.

As far as your pictures and plan:

The best laid schemes o' Mice an' Men,
Gang aft agley,
An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
For promis'd joy!
(The best laid schemes of Mice and Men
oft go awry,
And leave us nothing but grief and pain,
For promised joy!)

Eh, don't worry about your sunrise photos. I say sunrises should be shot when you're 'feeling' sunrisey...and never forced. (but you are funny)

GG - Hi GG, we had such a nice time and were so pleasantly surprised by how much we like it there in the Southwest. Never did get back to my conference discussion, did I? There are a few more things which should be posted. Definitely something on the Bastrop fire. Thanks for popping in, will come by and visit you soon (oh and maybe post...I'm always lurking over by you though, lol) I saw a Corgi win an agility competition in AKC news. Cracks me up those lil guys can move and jump the way they do. Big smiles from our four legged gang to yours. Also, quick story: There was a bird in a house I was showing who was talking and singing just ear piercingly beautifully. However he was so loud, the clients and I couldn't even talk, and had to leave in order to discuss things lol. He was very pretty, and looked like your...your...oh dagnabit, I forgot the name. Is it 'fred'? Brainf$#^ LOL Syd...it's Syd!!! How could I forget that cutie pie's name :) I had to go back to your Christmas blog and look :) Ok ramble ramble...hope you have a nice day there, too.

Ozgalah - Glad you came back in. Good to hear all is going well with your shows. Can't imagine how much work it would be to get ready for a show a weekend with Springers. Well how cool you are coming half way round the world to Wisconsin to see a breeder. Good story. Wisconsin and Illinois have a lot, a lot of very good kennels and breeders, and Michigan, too by the way.

Alright, I better get a move on. Have a great day all.

Morning, jus,

It was looking good here, but now we have some fog. I don't mind that, as long as it moves through and burns off. We'll see. There's a 20% chance of rain, which I usually discount completely, but may be...

I am so sick of greyness. Do you think you can blow hard and send some of your weather over here, I am happy to take whatever you send - anything is better than this blanket GREY. What's more annoying is that fifty miles south of me they can see that funny orange ball that should be in the sky!

Did you know I was taking a sunrise every morning for an annual challenge? Well, in January I got 12, in February I made 18 and March, so far, just ONE!!

Hi Jus, quick pop back in yes the dogs have ben going well, have promised my Husband I will not show EVERY weekend this year ( b ut I did also point out if I am at a dog show I don't spend money!) Mind you the reason I am going to Wisconsin is to visit the American National specialty of our breed so he does keep telling me this is ONE expensive dog show...bless him! Speaking to breeders and watching their dogs is a great way to learn about a breed, I have a lady coming to visit me and the dogs next week who has taken a mature ex show dog from a friend of mine in another State and she just wants the dog to socialise with his own kind so that should be fun. We always encourage people to come and see the dogs before they make any decisions about our breed, most decide they would like one but for some just seeing how big they are or how active they are, or just how they look convinces them they are not the breed for them and I would rather they make that decision BEFORE they buy rather than after when we then need to rehouse the dog!
Anyway it a beautiful Autumn day here 31 degrees and a touch of coolness in the breeze, so much work to do in the garden maybe even a possability of rain later in the week. Tho' most of Australia has had its fill of rain for a while!

Hi OZ, ohhhh sooo excited to hear about your trip. You will have lovely weather! It has been really warm this winter.
No matter, as long as you keep paying attention like you do, you should have no troubles.

How is your dog doing in the shows? The new puppy will be ready Wednesday and yes, we are excited. I'm sure you know how hard this will be bringing a new on on board, lol. Don't know if you saw a previous post, but we found a 'pulling' agility event for American Bulldogs being held not too far from here. I am encouraging my son (age 20) to go and learn from the breeders and animals. Should be cool.

Ok have to run...all's quiet here with the weather so far this evening. Seems to have moved East. But, it did get quite warm with the sun and saw some pretty impressive cloud tops here and there. A tad humid as well. Hope it passed.

Hi Jus, looks like you have been very busy glad you enjoyed your trip and the puppy looks gorgeous! I am watching your weather closely we are visiting Chicago and Milwaukee in a few weeks after last year I said I wouldn't visit my daughter in Spring again but here we go!!!! We got caught up in the tornados that hit Minneapolis last year and as someone who is not used to it, it was scary...... but picking up on some of the comments in your blog I was astounded at the number of people who totally ignored all the warnings. We were in the basment of a friends house listening to the warnings about the tornado on the ground and heading for this suburb and the guy at the back of her house was outside cutting his lawn the whole time!!!!! The next morning we were at our daughters house when the sirens went off and again tornado on the ground heading for her suburb and people were walking their dogs and driving into the gym opposite her place and standing outside chatting. I on the other hand was petrified!!!! I do wish our emergency people and government would take a lead from some of your systems though, we get warnings over SOME of our radio stations and SOME of our TV and after the Victorian fires a couple of years ago we apparently will get text messages telling us to leave......at least with your siren system going those who want to listen KNOW something is going on!During a flood situation a few months ago my friend's husband got a warning text at work that their home was under threat but she was at home and got nothing. He ignored the text completely until I rang him because I had been on the SES website to check their situation and saw their road was under threat and couldn't get hold of his wife to warn her!!! Anyway it was a false warning but forewarned is fore armed I say. Ok had my vent, I am really looking forward to our trip but don't want any severe weather can you arrange that please Hehe!

Hi NEw...and BF, yes. I'm in the office and can only see a limited amount (plus I'm doing a price report (CMA) on a home).

What is that little R-5 cell doing? oops it disappeared.

We just got dumped on big time. Lots of rain in this.

Hi,Jus,looks like a pretty heavy line of storms came right over you,not as bad as in Wisconsin, but looks like some pretty heavy downpours if not wind also.

Ewww, That line did extend southward. I didn't see that happen. And you with no camera.
:)

Maybe more down at Crystal Lake now and heading your way? And another just popped up SW of there.

These may just keep back-building. Might be good idea to keep an eye out for outflow boundary, especially late afternoon.
