Watches & Warnings

Lake Effect Snow Watch, Lake Effect Snow Warning
Issued: 3:57 PM EST Feb. 10, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Lake effect snow warning remains in effect until 4 PM EST
Thursday...
... Lake effect snow watch in effect from late Thursday night
through Friday evening...

The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a lake effect
snow watch... which is in effect from late Thursday night through
Friday evening.

* Locations... Chautauqua... Cattaraugus and southern Erie
counties... with the greatest snow amounts expected just inland
from Lake Erie across the Boston Hills and ski country through
Thursday. Late Thursday night and Friday a narrow band of
steadier snow will develop and may bring locally heavy snow
between Dunkirk and Blasdell... extending eastward into the
Boston Hills and Chautauqua ridge.

* Timing... the lake effect snow warning is in effect through
late Thursday afternoon. The lake effect snow watch is in
effect from overnight Thursday night through early Friday
evening.

* Accumulations... an additional 3 to 6 inches tonight and on Thursday.
Then a total of 6 to 10 inches of snow is possible late Thursday
night and Friday.

* Winds... west 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

* Visibilities... as low as a quarter mile at times.

* Impacts... lake effect snow and blowing snow will result in
difficult travel at times with snow covered roads and greatly
reduced visibilities.

* Forecaster confidence... forecast confidence in the watch is
average. There is still some uncertainty in the location and
intensity a band which is expected to develop late Thursday
night and Friday.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

In lake effect snow the weather can vary from locally heavy snow
in narrow bands to clear skies just a few miles away. If you will
be traveling across the region be prepared for rapid changes in
Road and visibility conditions.

If you lose power and plan on running a generator... make sure
that the generator is located outdoors and is properly
ventilated. Space heaters should also be properly ventilated and
used only if they are operating properly. Make sure snow does not
block exhausts and fresh air intakes for high efficiency furnaces
and water heaters.
