I've given the surviving squirrel to a licensed wildlife rehabber, who told me it was a female (I hadn't been sure) in good condition, that I had done all the right things, and that the other one must have been worse injured than it appeared since it died within hours. Said they had another one about the same age coming in later today so they would put them together for companionship. They will be kept about 3 months and then released into the wild. Thanks to all who expressed their concern!

Thank you, Susan! And thanks to everyone who emailed me with advice and links, one of the latter of which led to the person in whose care I have left this little one. It's been an interesting saga, but one I am relieved is now over, at least for my part. I'm sure I could have kept the baby and raised it on out, only I really don't have the time for it, and also there's the matter of my 8 dogs, who LOVE squirrels -- between their teeth. I had been keeping it away from them, but they've been very curious as to what was making the squeaking noises when I fed it, LOL!

Thanks for adding your comment, Laurel!

You did an amazing job and in contacting a lic. rehabber you gave her the best chance of survival when it comes time for her release. I am so pleased that she will have a buddy with her, that will help them both while learning how to be...well... squirrels!
Thank you for sharing your photos

Thank you, Miss3! Yes, even if I had been able to keep my dogs from eating her in the house, she would not have been able to hang around outdoors while adapting to being a "wild animal," since my dogs would have caught and killed her out there. My choices would then have been either to keep her as a pet, release her somewhere else that she was unfamiliar with, which would lessen her chances of being able to adapt, or in the end give her to someone else who could accomplish her adaptation. By transferring her while she is still very young, I think I have improved her chances to become a wild squirrel as God intended.

Thank you, Dianne! It was fun, and would have been more so except for limiting factors such as my time and my dogs. And please keep in mind, after all, it is "only" a squirrel.

Thanks for adding your comment, Dorothy! I think both squirrels were females; the rehabber after hearing my story said that the other one must have been worse injured than it looked, to have died that quickly. But this little gal now has an excellent chance to grow up and be returned to the wild.
